How Long Can I Leave My Pup Alone?
In rural areas, dogs are not typically considered part of the family. They are work animals and most of the time, live outside. But in McKinney, most pups are regarded as part of our families. They sleep inside, often in our beds. As family members, they travel with us. We try to spend as much time as possible with our pups. We walk them and ensure they receive vet care.
In these days of COVID, humans are more often working from home and pups are not spending much time alone. However, when we must travel without our pups or are required to go into the office, how long can we leave our pups alone?
Every pup is different but the recommended time to leave your dog alone is 4-6 hours. It is not recommended that your pup be alone for more than 8 hours.
Here are the guidelines:
- Under 10 weeks – 1 hour
- 10-12 weeks – 2 hours
- 3 months – 3 hours
- 4 months – 4 hours
- 5 months – 5 hours
- 6 months – 6 hours
- Over 6 months – maximum 6-8 hours
There are several factors which effect the amount of time you can leave your dog.
For example:
- Do you have a dog door so that your pup can go outside to potty or be relieved from boredom?
- Does your pup get bored easily and become destructive?
- Does your dog suffer from separation anxiety?
If you must leave your pup for more than 6 hours, consider:
- Using a professional dog walker. A potty break, a walk, belly rubs, and human interaction will help keep your pup from engaging in shenanigans
- Dog puzzles
- Music/TV
