ESSENTIAL OILS FOR CATS AND DOGS? OF COURSE!!!!
What do you do when your fur baby is anxious, has an upset tummy, a tick or skin irritation? Is there something to help that has no harmful chemicals? Yes, there is!! You may have heard that essential oils are good for humans, and they are. They are also GREAT for pups and cats! All essential oils are not created equally. This blog will reference Young Living Company.
Why Young Living? After researching several products, I found Young Living to be the highest quality because of their proprietary Seed to Seal promise. It is the only oil company in the world with a global compliance program.
Do pets and essential oils work? Absolutely. As a matter of fact, animals seem to have “a natural affinity to the healing influence of essential oils”, according to Dr. Shelton, DVM, who uses essential oils regularly in her practice with all kinds of animals. Veterinarians agree that applying a pure, unadulterated therapeutic grade EO “can be applied safely with a fairly wide range of safety”, keeping in mind that the protocols are adjusted to the pet’s weight and taking into account the density of hair follicles, which allows better absorption.
For humans, applying oils to the feet is a good location and safe. This is not true for dogs and cat who have an uncomfortable detoxification reaction. Oils should also be diluted before applying. There is a dilution percentage or ratio guideline to follow.
Cats process and metabolize chemicals differently and need more attention when considering essential oils. They can benefit from them but their owners need to use more caution when choosing oils high in phenols and eugenols. EOs can be used with your kitties in a higher dilution ratio. Diffusing oils is preferred as well. If you diffuse and the cat enters the room, he likes it. If he exits the room every time you diffuse a certain oil, make note of that oil and try a different one. Cats have a more acute sense of smell than humans. Dogs can smell 10,000 to 100,000 times better than humans. A little oil goes a long way.
Young Living has several great products from their Animal Scents Line, such as, Animal Scents Cat Treats, Dental Pet Chews, Animal Scents Paragize, Repelaroma, and several other products for prevention and for improving and maintaining the health of your pet. Oils help tremendously with pet anxiety during storms and separation, for skin and stomach issues, and joint discomfort.
Just like us, our furry ones need help preventing illness, improving their immunity, and reducing pain and discomfort, which improves quality of life. Happy pet, happy pet parent…right!?
I am working with Top Dog Pet Sitters to offer a class for pet parents focusing on using Essential Oils for pets. Details will be announced.
